Genesis 6:11-22 (KJV)
  1. The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
  2. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
  3. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
  4. Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
  5. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
  6. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
  7. And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
  8. But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.
  9. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
  10. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.
  11. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.
  12. Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

"Make Thee an Ark"

Genesis 6:11-22

This morning we come to one of the most fascinating stories in the entire Bible. Noah and the ark is something that captures the attention and imagination of the young and old. It is a story worth trusting . . . some find it difficult to accept Noah and the ark. "God writes with a pen that never blots, speaks with a tongue that never slips, acts with a hand that never fails" C.H. Spurgeon. The account of Noah's flood is worthy of our trust. It is a story worth telling . . . to kids, adults and any interested student of the Bible.

  1. It answers many specific questions . . . which we will examine in the weeks ahead.
  2. It answers many spiritual questions . . . which we will begin to answer today.

How does it answer spiritual questions? Augustine said that the Scriptures once seemed rude, and unpolished, in comparison to Cicero's adorned style, because he (Augustine) did not understand the Bible's interiora (inward beauty). But when "my mind was illuminated to understand them, no writing appeared so wise or even eloquent."

  1. THE FLOOD pictures God's judgment upon those who rebel against Him . . .
"But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming Son of man be" (Matthew 24:37). When Peter describes a coming judgment he compared it to the flood (II Peter 3:5).
    1. Man is accountable to God for his conduct . . .
"The wickedness of man was great . . . and the Lord said, "I will destroy man whom I have created" (Genesis 6:7). God has the right to command His subjects.
    2. God will punish (destroy) the man who rebels . . .
This destruction is both of the body and the soul. Jesus Himself describes this: "Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28).
  2. THE ARK pictures God's plan of salvation for sinners in need of deliverance . . .
There are at least seven types in the ark that point us to Jesus Christ and His work.
    1. God initiated and revealed the design for the ark . . . it is not man's initiative.
    2. The ark is made of gopher wood (v.14) . . . it is called "cypress wodd" in NIV. Cypress wood is called "eternal wood." That which secured life was a tree.
    3. The ark became a refuge from divine judgment (Genesis 7:1) . . . just as everyone in the ark was saved from God's wrath, those in Christ are saved from wrath.
    4. The ark provided security because of the "pitch" (v.14) . . . the ark was made watertight by this "covering" of pitch. So too, the atonement of Christ covers us. "Zetteth" is usually the word but here the word used is "kapher" -- atonement.
    5. The ark had one door (v.16) . . . Jesus said, "I am the door" (John 10:9).
    6. The ark had one window (v.16) . . . it was a high window, so one could not look out and see the corruption of the world. Our affections are on things above.
    7. The judgment fell on all not inside the ark . . . as it will on those without Christ.
  3. THE MAN who entered the ark pictures everyone who trusts Jesus Christ.
God told Noah, "Make thee an ark." God is saying to you, "Make thee an ark." He tells you how. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved."
