Genesis 9:1-17 (KJV)
  1. And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
  2. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
  3. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
  4. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
  5. And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.
  6. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
  7. And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.
  8. And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,
  9. And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;
  10. And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
  11. And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
  12. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
  13. I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
  14. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
  15. And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
  16. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
  17. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

"The Covenant Keeping God"

Genesis 9:1-17

One of the beautiful benefits of being a Christian is knowing that God is on our side. He, who is above all, over all, and the greatest of all, is on our side. When Noah left the ark his family was alone, but God was on their side. God was on their side and He blessed them. How did He bless Noah? The same way he blesses us: through a covenant. This must be important, for it is mentioned seven times: in verses 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17.

  1. The idea of a covenant.
The word covenant means 'to cut an agreement,' and it comes from the Hebrew word which also means 'to fetter.' Did you ever 'fetter' a horse? You bind and shackle him. A covenant is something that binds you. In the Bible there are two types of covenants.
    1. Two equals agreeing -- examples would include David and Jonathan, kings, etc.
    2. A superior cutting an agreement with an inferior -- examples would include a king to subjects; a master to servant; and God with man. God's covenants are two:
      1. Conditional -- "I will do this, if you do this." God to Adam -- I will provide if . . . God to Moses -- I will protect if . . . God to Israel -- I will be your God if . . .
      2. Unconditional -- "I will." Unconditional covenants rest on God's faithfulness alone. Covenants are very serious. Garments and weapons were exchanged. In many, if not most instances, an animal dies. There were blood covenants.
  2. Some illustrations of a covenant.
    1. David and Jonathan. In I Samuel 18:3-4 Jonathan and David cut a covenant to be faithful and true to each other's families. Later, David took in Mephibosheth.
    2. Mr. Stanley's pursuit of Dr. Livingstone. Livingstone was a great missionary to Africa. Mr. Stanley came from England to try to find Dr. Livingstone. While looking, he came upon a fierce tribe. A porter suggested Stanley cut a covenant. "This foreigner desires to cut a covenant." The exchanged gifts. Stanley gave a goat; the chief gave an 8' spear. Stanley showed the spear for safe passage.
    3. The New Covenant. What is it that protects you from the wiles of Satan? "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony." (Revelation 12:11). This cup is the blood of the new covenant with you."
      Old Covenant -- If . . . then . . .
New Covenant -- I shall bless you.
  3. The issuance of the Noahic covenant.
God promised seven things to Noah and his family . . . .
    1. God will faithfully perform the cycle of nature (8:22).
    2. God will place fear in animals toward men (9:2).
    3. God will provide meat as food (9:3).
    4. God will prohibit the taking of human life (9:6). "Whosoever sheddeth man's blood (life), by man shall his blood (life) be shed." A life for a life.
    5. God will perpetuate the race (9:7).
    6. God promises no more universal floods (9:11).
    7. God will place a sign in the sky (9:13). A rainbow is God's sign of faithfulness.
