Genesis 1:14-19 (KJV)
  1. And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
  2. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
  3. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
  4. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
  5. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
  6. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

"The Heavens Declare the Glory of God"

Genesis 1:14-19

On day four of creation God filled the heavens with lights (the sun, moon, and stars) "to give light upon the earth" (v.15), for "The heavens declare the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1).

  1. The Heavens Declare God's Majesty over Creation . . . "And God made . . ." (v.16).
For centuries men have worshipped the sun, moon and stars. These objects should inspire us to worship the God who created them. As we have seen in previous studies those without God "worship the creation" (Romans 1:25). The heavens point to God.
    1. God created the sun, moon, and stars on the fourth day of creation.
This occurred 6,000 years ago, not 20 billion years ago as evolutionists would have you believe. Some have tried to use the vastness of the universe and the distance of the stars from the earth to argue for an old universe. Distance can be reckoned by "he (God) stretched out the heavens like a curtain" (Psalm 104:2).
    2. God inspired the writer of Genesis to record accurately the creation account.
"God made two great lights, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night" (v.16). The writer is precise, clear, and accurate with words.
      1. He did not say the lesser light to rule the day . . . ancient peoples believed the moon was far greater than the sun, but was farther away.
      2. He did not say the greatest light to rule the day . . . there are stars in the universe thousands of times larger than our sun. You can trust your Bible.
  2. The Heavens Declare God's Mercy upon Creation . . . "for seasons" (v.15).
Our universe is not random in design or scope. God created the universe through spoken sentences and then established the lights to bring order into the universe.
    1. All my times are in the hands of God . . .
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1). The God who created the sun, moon and stars ordains all events.
    2. All my bad times will not last forever . . .
"He hath made everything beautiful in His time" (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
    3. All my times are designed to turn my eyes toward God . . .
"I know that whatsoever God does, it shall be forever: God doeth it, that men should fear (honor) him" (Ecclesiastes 3:14). "Remember thy Creator" (Ecclesiastes 12:1).
  3. The Heavens Declare God's Message for Creation . . . "he made the stars" (v.16).
"He telleth the number of the stars, he calleth them all by their names" (Psalm 147:4). There are 70 sextillion known stars in the universe. Everyone could own 11 trillion. However, the stars visible to the naked eye are those mankind have known by name. The Lord said to Job, "Can thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season?" (Job 38:32). Mazzaroth is literally "the twelve signs." Many commentators believe this refers to the twelve signs of the zodiac. Dr. E.W. Bullinger, a 19th Century Lutheran pastor, and Dr. D. James Kennedy, a modern day Presbyterian pastor, have both written books that detail the possibility of the gospel of Christ being portrayed in the zodiac. Ancients believed that God revealed to Seth and Enoch the message of the stars. Whether this is true or not, Jesus Christ is the culmination of creation and history.
