I Am Forgiven
What is it that saves you from the wrath, anger, and righteous condemnation of a holy
God poured out upon sinners?
Most people would respond:
- My faith in Christ
- My repentance of sins
There are many problems with the answer (infants, works, imbeciles, etc. . . . )
The Biblical answer to the above question is found in I Timothy 1:15 . . .
How does Christ save sinners?
Answer:
He secures forgiveness for them through His death on the cross (Romans 8:32) (John 6:35-40)
(John 10:25-30)
What kind of forgiveness does God grant His people?
Answer:
Full and complete
Colossians 3:13 . . . "having forgiven you all trespasses"
Ephesians 1:4 . . . "According as he hath chosen us in him (Christ) before the
foundation of the world that we should be holy and without blame."
Ephesians 1:7 . . . "In whom we have . . . the forgiveness of sins."
Jeremiah 31:31 . . . "Behold, the days come saith the Lord, that I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel . . . I will forgive their iniquity and will remember their sin no
more."
Psalm 32:2 . . . "Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity."
"It is shallow nonsense to say God forgives us because He is love. The only
ground upon which God forgives us is the cross." - Oswald
Chambers
"The Bible knows nothing of mere pardon. There can be no pardon
except on the ground of satisfaction of justice." - Geoffry Wilson
Two points of application:
- Though God forgives at the cross, assurance of forgiveness for any individual comes
through faith in Christ and repentance of sin.
"Sin forsaken is the best evidence of sin forgiven." - Anonymous
- A lack of a forgiving spirit is often evidence of a lack of a forgiven spirit.
"A man may as well go to hell for not forgiving as for not believing." - Thomas
Watson
The Lord's Prayer: "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors."
